BIOL 4160 Lecture : Day 1 Notes
Document Summary
Law of electro neutrality : it"s a bad law. Highest concentration of a cell: calcium outside of cell. Proteins that act as pumps, there are multiple chloride pumps. The majority of cl- is outside because it the anion to the na+. Negative charge inside cell is called resting membrane potential (voltage) Potassium leaving the cell through pore is diffusion ( a random movement of ions). There is an electrical gradient being put up and the inside of the cell is becoming more negative. So the gradient puts some more k+ back in, to get closer to equilibrium. The cell will only meet equilibrium if that"s the only ion moving. Lets say the cell is no longer permeable for k+, but there"s some channels open that is permeable to. A real cell has leakage channels for k+ and na+ , but k+ is much more permeable through the membrane than na+.
