Just add up the deiniions of all the words and you know what it means. Knowing what a speaker meant to say is suicient to determine the meaning, even if an uterance has two possible interpretaions, there can only be one intended meaning . Ignores the role of the listener in co-creaing meaning. A direct link, a sign of symptom: ex. Intenional acion taken on behalf of a purposive speaker in order to accomplish one or more social goals. Intenional acion: we use language to do things. Indicator of purpose: the choice of one symbol over another indicates the goal a speaker is pursuing, speakers rely on acts of reference to choose signals.
