ECON 2010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: The Dilemma, Joel Feinberg
Document Summary
In whatever manner man is considered, he is connected to universal nature (holbach: the very moment one is brought in to this world, one is obligated to abide by nature"s laws. From the moment you gasp your first breathe until you exhale your last one, one is bounded by circumstances which one has no control over. For most people, being in control is of the essence. Now, most of us agree our feelings and desires are practically out of our control and we seem to be at peace with that. Yet there seems to be a reality in which most agents could never be at peace with. French philosopher paul holbach is one of few at peace with such a reality. He argues that all events have a cause, including that of your free will. For your will just follows the strongest motive.
