Wants to remind community where they came from and stress that their survival and success with come from their devotion to god o o. If they fail it will be because they weren"t christian enough. If they succeed they will be a model to future settlers. Diversity of circumstance reflects diversity of god"s creation. The rich have an obligation to help the poor. So people have opportunities to show brotherly affection. Sea voyage was terrible and nothing was awaiting them.
