Richard sees himself as being in the shadows; being in darkness and hidden from public eye makes it easier to do evil things. Second sentence: now (5): grim-visaged war turned courtier, war and love: richard personifies war here; his interests are no longer in the battlefield. His interests are seducing women (lust not love- nurturing relationships are not what he wants). After war there needs to be a period for people to reproduce.
