Document Summary
Course perspective and common topics: a critical perspective - a critical perspective is one where all facets of facts and conventional wisdom are challenged, other than the introductory lectures, all regional lectures have a similar structure. These are called common topics : environment and society, history, economy, and territory, culture and populations, demography and urbanization, futures. Thinking regionally : regions have distinct environmental, social and economic characteristics. These places are different because they are connected". Systems, interdependence, and change: systems: the world can be thought of as an interconnected system, where changes in one part lead to changes in others. Globalization and regionalization: globalization: increasing integration of economies, culture, environmental governance on a global scale, regionalization: both the emergence of new regions and the process by which existing regions retain (or emphasize!) their unique features. These may be economic, cultural or environmental: these processes are happening simultaneously and shape the contemporary and future world.
