Old geography: the study of the spatial distribution of phenomena (on earth"s surface) Writing about the earth : cultural reasons very commonly they wanted to spread culture, religion, what is where, description/observation and ideals to other people and different places, simple curiosity. New geography: why are things where they are, explanation/understanding, this was a lot more of an intellectual problem, physical, hydrology, climatology, biogeography, geomorphology, meteorology, pedology, human, social geography, cultural geography, economic geography, behavioral geography, political geography, urban geography. The 4 connected parts of the earth system: the atmosphere (earth"s air, the lithosphere (earth"s solid portions, the biosphere (earth"s living things, the hydrosphere (earth"s waters) Methods & tools: the scientific method, image of the real world- what we already know. The sum total of all experiences, books read, things done, etc. Most often is an educated guess that has some probability of being successful: verification- going out and collecting data, surveys, analyze data.
