GEOL 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Sulfur, Calcite, Gypsum
Document Summary
A rock is made of 2 or more minerals (can be the same mineral) Landscape, allows us to look at evolution over time. Outcrop, a smaller scale, less recent history, fractures in rock. Close-up, shows a penny to see scale, granite, learn the rock type by looking at this. Thin section, even closer, cut the rock into a very thin strip, 30 microns, able to put it under a microscope, you can view what minerals they are from the light. Inorganic: can"t be something that used to be alive. ^ can get more in depth though (ex. Microbes can produce a chemical reaction and make minerals out of them, but microbes can never be a mineral). Ordered internal structure: the atoms lineup in an ordered mattered. Composed of visible or microscopic crystals: crystalline rock. Observe that these rocks have more than one type of mineral.
