Persian civil war give the ionian city states to persia, shortly after rest in wars, persia has civil war and sparta intervenes in persian affairs and it weakens them, so they withdraw; Sparta has to deal with own helots & city- states trying to gain freedom. Demosthenes- philippics (argued law cases and well known for speaking ability, argues with philip over losing freedom and thinks athens should fight him) Philip ii (359-336) takes kingship from nephew, builds massive military. Athens debates over how it is to be ruled by philip, they think he will obtain order in society; others want independence. Leaves a young son, athens thinks they will gain freedom. Story of taming horse, he tames untamable and shows his talents even at a young age.
