Anglo-saxon invasions (3rd-5th century: to rome and britain, divides kingdoms, creates dominance for periods of times. Heptarchy: kingdoms gain and lose dominance, bretwalda- chief king over all of his territory kings, emergence of wessex in 9th century become dominant.
