During the time between the collapse of rome, the city of rome itself was occupied and by 500 ad people think it has been renowned by others. We then entered a time in the west when our energies were largely soent as peasants tilling the fields. We would have never traveled and been illiterate. Believed if you traveled too far you would fall off the earth. The greeks had theorized of the earth being a globe though now it was planar. During this time there was an intellectual decline. Muslims were particularly good at invading and finally threw over rome. So why we in the west were declining, the muslims were advancing in math, science, medicine. This advance of the muslims helped us because we spent most of our time later on killing the muslims and bringing back this information. So the crusades brought back the writing of the greeks and romans.
