Document Summary
Western christendom around 1500: a fragmented civilization. The holy roman empire- different kings under the emperor. Kingdoms within the empire, principalities under the kingdoms. Believed rulers had divine right- right to rule from god. But they didn"t have super powers: nobility and clergy, indulgences. The head of any of the states was allowed only one wife. The children of that 1 marriage were able to rule later on. Often leads to a period of civil war. The other members of the nobility try to take over. Sometimes women could rise as the ruler- ex elizabeth in england. They got power from e hierarchy of the catholic church. Pope gets his power from the apostolic succession. Semi divine- supernatural powers like the power to transform the bread and wine during the holy communion. Indulgences- pay money to be absolved of your sins- lessens your time spent in purgatory.
