America has a long history of opposing empire. Berlin conference- europeans assumed the african continent was for them to divide up and retain without considering the rights of africans. Political reasons: to bring self government to cuba and the philippines. Also a show of imperial power by the americans. Cubans had been fighting for independence for 30 years. Immigrants was one of the major subjects of debate. Who are they, where did they go, why did they come, and what injustices did they suffer. Statue of liberty= gift from france in 1880. Ellis island in the east/ angel island in the west. Chinese- came to california after the gold rush and helped build the transcontinental railroad.
