Factories and workers: how the other half lives (jacob riis, 1890) 1890, more than 700 people per acre in lower east side of new york: the jungle (upton sinclair, 1906) Perhaps the era"s most influential novel, whose description of unsanitary slaughterhouses and led directly to the passage of the pure food and drug act and the meat inspection act of 1906. Goals 10-14 of the knights of labor: knights of labor (terence powderly) Wanted to avoid strikes, boycotts instead: american federation of labor (samuel gompers) Founded out of the end of the knights of labor. Goals were much more limited (higher wages and better working conditions). Denied membership to unskilled workers such as nearly all blacks, women, and new european immigrants. Not for banning child labor and equal pay for equal work. Support mainstream politicians who might be willing to help afl with limited goals. Says they are labor union"s most powerful weapons.
