1865 the civil war ends after 4 years: fall & winter: the confederacy is on the verge of collapse. Atlanta has fallen to us forces and william sherman. South: doubled amount of those injured, 95% of the war was fought in the south: huge financial and structural/population loss, including the change in slavery. What would the supreme court say: everyone agrees that something stronger than the ep needs to happen: 13th. Lincoln signed it (symbolic because presidents usually don"t have a role in the passing of amendments). Lincoln is assassinated and does not get the chance to do all he wanted to do. There was also an attempt on the life of the secretary of state. This puts everything in the hands of the vp: andrew johnson. Johnson was put on the ticket in 1864 because he was a democrat. Presidential reconstruction: all former 11 confederate states organize new state governments to include johnson"s provisions.
