What do you do now that slavery is over: 3 attempts to mend the divided nation (lincolns, johnsons, radical republicans) Lincoln tried to make his plan during the war. Took very little for state to become part of the union again. New state government has to outlaw slavery, and have to repudiate the idea that states can succeed from the union. Louisiana is the first state readmitted to the union under lincoln"s policy. 5 days after civil war, lincoln was assassinated. Johnson was not in the same political party as lincoln. Much more lenient than lincoln in his policy. He appointed a provisional governor to each state that had not came back to the union. By the end of 1865, all the states had rejoined the union (texas in early 1866). Policies were trouble to congressional republicans- mad at laws made specifically for black people (black codes) not treating slaves as equal.
