Document Summary

Had he not had backing from the king of france and landed near his ancestral homeland in. Wales, he probably would have been defeated and only turned into a history footnote. Survived because he was determined to meet all challenges. Mid 1490s italian diplomat wrote a character sketch king is fear rather than loved. Henry began his reign without any real practical experience. Didn"t have the experience of managing his own estates. Had never held a political position in his life. His claim to the throne couldn"t really be justified by anything other than his battlefield victory. Henry does have a connection, but through a bastard line so it isn"t technically valid. However, he managed to get parliament to recognize the validity of that claim. Henry was suspicious and distrustful of his peers for good reason, since many of those peers were disloyal and looked for ways to betray the new regime.
