Document Summary
Link btwn mvmts that infants make & their developing minds has a stronger link than originally believed. To understand cognitive dvlpmnt in infancy, you must understand motor dvlpmnt & the interactions & transactions btwn them. Such an approach fits with the ecological perspective as well as the constraints model. Most newborns exhibit spontaneous & reflexive mvmts. Going toward becoming toddlers they begin to attain motor milestones. The interplay of many systems cognitive, perceptual, motor leads to mvmt adaptions seen in infancy: ex. Gross mvmts slowly becoming more refined throughout infancy & early childhood: ex. Infants gaining ability to lift their heads, sit up, & eventually stand up w/ minimal support. Many constraints in addition to maturation encourage/discourage early motor behavior. Reflexive or spontaneous (clark, 1995): spontaneous: mvmts not caused by known external stimuli. Like squirm, thrusting their legs or arms, stretching fingers or toes or make spontaneous mvmts (stereotypies: reflexive: stereotypical responses elicited by specific external stimuli.
