Really no such thing as a specific act that is a hate crime. Murder, manslaughter, forcible rape, agg assault, simple assault, intimidation, etc. How is it counted: ucr, nibrs, data collection started in 1991, has been slowly getting better. In 2012, there were about 5800 single bias incidents: there were about 6700 single-bias offenses within these incidents. Crimes against persons are most common with simple assault & intimidation. (60%) Thrill seeking: hate crime done because one enjoys it; usually group based, possibly to achieve acceptance or status within their group. Reactive: reacts to protect himself from real or perceived threat. Mission: targets groups seen as a problem to society. Recently estimated hate crime incidents to be 25 times higher than what ucr reports. 82% involved violence (major violent offense in 1/3) In 2012 hate crimes accounted for 1. 3% of all victimizations and 4. 2% of violent victimizations.
