Style periods: middle ages (476-1450, renaissance (1450-1600, baroque (1600-1750, classical (1750-1820, romantic (1820-1900, impressionist (1880-1920, modern (1900-1985, post modern (1945-present) Middle ages: fall of rome in 476, beowulf written, charlemagne crowned holy roman emperor, cathedral of notre dame is built, chaucer writes canterbury tales, black death. Rhythm: gregorian chant and early secular songs, notes of equal value, no clearly marked rhythms or meter, polyphonic compositions (after 1180, triple meter, repeated rhythmic patterns. Harmony: monophonic lacks harmony, polyphonic compositions, dissonant chords within phrases, phrases end with open, hollow-sounding chords. Color: vocal music predominates, medieval instruments, little instrumental music survives, unique sound quality, some (sackbut- similar to modern trombone, shawm- similar to oboe) are ancestors of modern instruments, others (cornett) became extinct. Texture: most music is monophonic, polyphonic compositions, between 2 to 4 parts, non-imitative counterpoint.
