Reading assignment week #1: (assigned august 23, 2011. Read chapters 1 and 2 and provide a 2-page written summary; submit it to me on august 30 before the lecture starts. Longitude an angle defined by a semi-circle (meridian) from a ref point on earth at royal greenwich. Latitude defined by circles parallel to the equator. 1 latitude = 60 nautical miles = 111 km. For convenience, zigzags are allowed to avoid inconvenience over lands and islands. Sidereal or stellar time defined by the daily motion of the celestial sphere (the distant stars). Solar time defined by the motion of the visible sun in the sky.
