Document Summary
Argument form is an arrangement of statement variables and operators such that uniform substitution of statements for statement variables results in an argument. The conjunctive premise of a dilemma (constructive or destructive) is called the horns of the dilemma . Resisting dilemmas: cd and dd occur so frequently in various types of debates that specific strategies for resisting them have been developed, we cannot resist them be attacking their logic (because they are valid). If the disjunctive premise is a tautology, we have no choice but to grasp the dilemma by the horns (at least if we wish to resist it) The following are common invalid argument forms: similar to disjunctive syllogism (sds, pvq/ p// q, denying the antecedent (da, p)q/ ~p// ~q, affirming the consequent (ac, p)q/ q// p. Da and ac are particularly important owing to their affinity with modus ponens and modus tollens, respectively.
