Document Summary

Chapter 1: energy and power and the physics of explosions. The 4 types of forces are: electromagnetic strong nuclear force, weak nuclear force, gravity. Heat is kinetic energy, the kinetic energy of molecules. Chemical reaction: when atoms break apart or come together. Speed of light: 186000 miles per second in a vacuum. Conduction: energy flows by contact (metals usually good conductors, plastic is poor conductor) Convection: energy is carried by a moving material, usually a gas or a liquid (ex: hot air moving through room) Gravity: any 2 objects that have mass attract each other with a force. Mass: amount of material weight: fore of attraction of gravity. Escape velocity: gravity provides the force that keeps the earth"s satellite in circular orbit. Radioactivity: explosion of the nucleus of the atom. Isotopes: atoms of an element with different numbers of neutrons. Alpha rays are stopped by piece of paper. Beta rays have more penetration than alpha rays.
