Document Summary

Exercise metabolism the study of how the body provides itself with energy to exert power. Atp - source of energy in the body. Fatigue the failure of the muscle to produce a desired power output. 4 sites of atp hydrolysis neuronal membrane na/k pump, sr ca pump, sarcolemma na/k pump, cross bridge cycle. Fatigue is related to the rate of atp re-synthesis, not the rate of atp depletion. The body has 3 mechanisms to maintain atp levels, immediate, non-oxidative, and oxidative. These systems differ in their rate of atp synthesis, and fatigues occurs when this rate cannot equal the rate of atp usage. All 3 systems are working at the same time, and their respective contributions depend on work demand. Immediate energy system consists of the atp-cp (phosphagen system) which uses the enzyme creatine phosphokinase (cpk) to convert adp+cp=>atp+c; and the myokinase system which uses myokinase to convert 2 adp => atp+amp.
