Document Summary

Lecture 10: warm fronts, cold fronts, and the mid-latitude cyclone. Why are clouds flat on the bottom: air masses, mountain sized, huge, have the same temperature and moisture characteristics. Front: a boundary that separates two air masses. Four types of fronts: stationary front cold front: warm front, occluded front. Warm front: warm air advances, gradual uplift light, long lived precipitation, moves slower, horizontal clouds: nimbostrstus and stratus, slower moving, gentle uplift, horizontally extended clouds, long-lived, light precipitation, warm air advancing temperatures can climb 5 to 15 degrees. *cold is more dense so it pushes warm air easier. *both fronts move in direction that symbols are facing. Stationary front: neither front advances, altocumulus clouds, stagnant temperatures, and low wind speed two air messes reach a stalemate. Occluded front: cold front takes over a warm front. *typically have high pressure behind a cold front.
