General split the kingdom into smaller areas, hellenistic kingdoms 323-142. Rome takes over territory (dominant power when christianity originated) end of the second temple period, jews revolted & were not successful 70 ce (destruction of the temple) Jews revolted again in 132 ce & jews were banished. Alexander the great took over from macedonia to india. Roman empire not as vast as alexander"s, they conquered all the land surrounding the mediterranean sea. Jordan river: flows through the sea of galilee into the dead sea. Samaritans: worshipped the same god as the jews & had some of the same scriptures did not get along with jews. Patriarchal values (men in the position of authority) Ruling elite 1% of population (rulers & governors) Retainer class: people who work for the elite 5%
