Science of hadits: specialization developed: people collected hadits who specialized in law and theology; 2-3c ah the climax of the science of hadits. Fieldwork: journeys, witnesses, handed down oral traditions, tracing lineages of handing traditions down. Rihla collection of hadits on a fieldtrip. 6 collections of hadits generally accepted as the canon. 2 very rigorous (sahih): imam bukhari 9c. Isnad = chain of transmitters (this makes the hadit credible and authentic) Matn = the report itself (the significance of this is depended on the isnad) Broken isnad: matn separated from the isnad: chain of transmitters is broken. Different statuses exits from the hadits: lower higher status.
