RNR 1001 Lecture : Rnr Final Notes
Document Summary
Conservation of forest resources increasing public attention in the past few decades rain forest destruction- biodiversity and carbon sequestration logging controversies- clear cuts lost of forest dwelling species- spotted owls. Forest resources: billion per year industry and worldwide, wood and paper, ecosystem services, regulate water quality and streamflow (tree roots, stream function- alocthonous input- what the stream receives from outside (branches, leaves) provides homes for creatures. Removing trees from around a stream will change the ecology: soil stabilization, biogeochemical cycles and hydrologic pump- trees help with this. Can also go very far down into the ground and pump nutrients to grow their leaves that wouldn"t normally be accessible. Forest development: ecological succession- how systems change through time. Forests develop and evolve through time: primary ecological succession- start with bare rock. Through times the rocks become weathered, create dust, get nutrients, things start to grow. You already have soil here, just lost vegetation.
