April 5th 2012 (video: another brick in the wall- pink floyd) Education: process through which academic, social and cultural ideas and tools are developed (socialization to a varying degree). Functional illiteracy: inability to read/write well enough to function in society; 14% of us population is functionally illiterate. Innumeracy: having insufficient math skills to function in society; 22% of us population is innumerate. Human capital: knowledge and skills that make someone more productive and bankable. Hidden curriculum: nonacademic and less overt functions of education (gender segregation, power dynamics); helps social cohesion, but has also been used to impose dominant cultural values on outsiders or minorities. ((ex assimilation of native americans)) Marxist theories: schools are pawns of capitalism; teaching skills that maintain dominant/subordinate work force positions (you have to answer to a boss) Sorokin: schools are sorting machines, test for ability, talent and character, promote the best students, and eliminate the worst.
