Most sociologist believe they cause each other technology = cultural product. Culture = set of beliefs, traditions, and practices. Oldest understanding of culture focus on the distinction between: What is modified or created by humans. When the europeans meet non-westerners, culture evolved in differences between peoples, which is viewed positively or negatively. Culture = (superior) man (inferior) man = ethnocentrism . Nonmaterial culture encompasses values, beliefs, behaviors, and social norms. Material culture is everything that is a part of our constructed environment, such as books, fashion, ad monuments. Idea that we should recognize our differences across cultures without passing judgement on or assigning value to those differences. Cultural scripts modes of behavior and understanding that are not universal/ natural, but may shape beliefs/ concepts held by a society. Subcultures group united by concepts, values, traits, and/or behavioral patterns that distinguishes itself from others within the same culture/ society. Norms = how values tell us how to act.
