Social role: for each status you have a role. Role ambiguity: not knowing how to act (ex husband vs new husband) makes our lives unpredictable. Role conflict (multiple roles): go to party w friend or study for exam. Role strain (one role): single parent having to be affectionate and stern. Conflict: roommate and you looking for same job. Groups: statistical (family w parent and 2 children) categorical (redheads). Aggregate (football crowd) associatioal (democratic party) social (family). Social group (focus of sociology): interaction, belongingness, interest, and organization. Primary v secondary groups: primary: small, informal group of people who interact in a personal, direct way. Secondary: a group in which the members interact impersonally, have a few emotional ties, and comes together for a specific, practical purpose. Peer group: people of similar characteristics, usually the same age.
