Document Summary

Deviance is a violation of a social norm that illicit a negative reaction. Norms are the rules that guide our interactions, expectations of a society for a behavior. Norms are relative; therefore, deviance is relative. Norms change over time and space (different groups have different norms) Mores: norms that are much more serious, more likely to see put into laws. To get people to follow the norms are to illicit sanctions, which can be positive or negative or informal or formal: formal negative sanction: fines, death penalty, formal positive sanctions: awards. Informal positive/neg sanctions: shaking head yes or know, smiling or frowning etc. Deviance is more than just being different. We all have deviances, but having a deviant identity is something completely different, it means they have been caught doing it and they do it again. Absolutism: means that deviance is real, therefore, it is different from conventional behavior, and the people who engage in it are different.
