Liberal nationalism to 1848: most nationalists were liberal, nationalists want their nation to be free and independent--self governing. Both conservative want to preserve institutions of monarchy, aristocracy, and old order. Both anti-liberal (liberalism is the enemy: differences. Metternich sees industrial revolution as dangerous, disruptive, and a threat to world order. Bismarck understands that the industrial revolution can be used to strengthen power of the monarchy (sees link between industrial and military power) Metternich sees nationalism as most dangerous revolutionary force. Bismarck (chancellor of prussia) -- nationalism can be used to embrace power of monarchy. People will be willing to die/kill for the king. Metternich has a monolithic view of liberalism and that they"re all bad.
