Later illinois territory created (larger than il state) Each time a state is carved off, new legislative bodies are created. Lydia is brought to il as a slave (indiana territory), but no slavery existed there. Provisions in place for slave owners passing through with their slaves. Slave owner couldn"t continue journey: couldn"t get across mississippi river (during winter) Law: need to get to courthouse and establish term limit for indentured servitude between slave and slave owner. If there is no agreement reached within a certain period of time: slave is free. Lydia refuses to make the agreement with her owner (extraordinary in her circumstance) Owners can"t do anything, so they try to get out of il to missouri. Slave owner dies, family moves back to il. Slaves (including lydia) claim freedom while mitchell"s widow tried to make them enter indentured servitude.
