INFS 247 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Antivirus Software, Data Recovery
INFS Lecture 14
Data Security and Privacy
Data Security
oSecuring the computer data against unauthorized access
oUsing methods such as
Authentication
Login procedure using user ID and password
Access privileges
Granting different groups of users access to different portions of data
Granting ability to perform different actions on the accessible data
Data encryption
Data encryption translates data into a scrambled incomprehensible
form
Encryption key – data scrambling algorithm
Decryption key – reverts the data to its original state
Data backup and recovery
oData backup – saving additional physical copies of the data
oData recovery – recovering the data content after a failure
Backup vs Archive
oBackup – copy of data whose purpose is to restore the original in case of failure
Usually on hard-drives
oArchive – Historical data that is no longer actively used
Usually on tapes, discs, etc
Data threats
oLoss, corruption or theft of data due to unauthorized users and/or hackers
oLoss, corruption or theft of data due to computer viruses
oLoss or corruption of data due to unintentional erroneous inserts, deletes and updates
by authorized users
oLoss, corruption or theft of data due to malicious authorized users
