PHIL 130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Soup Kitchen, Firefighter, Moral Evil
Document Summary
Theodicy = an argument that the evil in the world is compatible with god"s love for us. The theodicy should avoid violating our pre theoretical. Pti = the (religious, scientific, and moral) views we hold before crafting the theodicy. This is why hick rejects theodicies which appeal to the fall from. It is internally coherent to cite genesis, but it violates our pti"s (b/c evolution, etc. ) Hick doesn"t accept the belief that human beings were once happy. Why is there moral evil? and perfect. Freely chosen good is more valuable than the absence of evil. Similarly, freely chosen faith is more valuable than inborn knowledge. The choice is moral evil, but the suffering/consequences are non moral evil. Moral virtue that is gained by hard work, effort, experience, is more intrinsically valuable than moral virtue that is born into us by god. Ex. if born morally perfect, wouldn"t be as good a quality as moral excellence developed over a lifetime.
