Looking at individuals is hard to tell motivations
oEasier to find motivation in a community
Necessities of a community
oHunters, Farmers, builders, weavers, tailors, doctors, toolmakers, cooks,
shoemakers, merchants, traders, ship builders, sailors
These are classified as the “workers class”, they are “tradable” and focus
on “self-interest”
oThen there are soldiers (guardians)
This is the Guardians class which is non-tradable, act in behalf of
protecting the community
Guardians cannot have same view as workers because they could take their weapons
and steal from the people
How soldiers should live
oNeed to be watched in their education
oCarefully choose the stories of gods and soldiers doing good so they see them as
models
oWe don’t want the guardians working in self interest
No stories of gods betraying each other
Show stories of soldiers helping others
Uplifting music and poems – no sad stuff
