PSYC 273 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Ecological Systems Theory, Suicidal Ideation, Major Depressive Episode
Document Summary
Feeling sad, frustrated, and hopeless about life, accompanied by loss of pleasure in most activities and disturbances in sleep, appetite, concentration, and energy. 20-50% experience mild to moderate feelings of depression. 15-20% have experienced a major depressive episode. Girls are more likely to be depressed than boys (even in adulthood) More socially acceptable for girls to be sad. Rumination (going over and over the issue, continues to contribute to the depression - also overall increasing the level of sadness by talking to other girls who are also sad) Can be influenced by both genetic and/or environmental factors. Suicidal ideation: someone is thinking about killing themselves consequences. Adolescent limited vs. life course persistent offenders. Peak of crime among adolescence, then a dip. Rate is much greater than the people who actually attempt suicide. Boys are more likely to actually kill themselves (more girls think about suicide)
