THEO 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 38: New Atheism, Open Theism, Omnibenevolence
Document Summary
Theodicy is any attempt to reconcile the goodness of god (omnibenevolence) with the problem of evil. And yet there is still evil/inequality in the world. God either doesnt know, or limits knowledge of the future. Some religions have an evil or fickle god(s) God either cant stop evil, or does not for some reason. God allows evil for some greater purpose. Either evil is the result of some prior sin, or all will be equaled out. We as finite creatures simply cant know god in god"s infinite ways. More concerned with the problem of evil than with the science/reason. Redefines theodicy to include any explanation of evil (with or without god) Any moral outrage of evil is a type of theodicy. New atheists reject god for the kind of world they see around them and they reject religion because of the behavior of the religious. Evaluative judgment (what is good/evil) contains moral expectations.
