Understand how biodiversity is important on several levels: landscape, community, and within a species: landscape diversity: the geographic differences in diversity. Dependant on fires, natural disasters (wiping the slate clean) Be able to discuss the different dimensions of community diversity: biological community: all different organisms (living) - interactive within an ecosystem, evenness vs. richness. Distribution of relative abundance vs. number of different species. You do not really see much species evenness. B. 3. b) few species in great numbers many species in small populations (rare: why is it important to keep track of both species richness and evenness. Evenness tells us about the distribution of resources. D. 1. a) more complexity = broader spectrum of resources (d. 1. a. 1) food, places to live, places to hide. Microclimate -- small areas of specific environmental conditions within a landscape. Tropical forests -- lots of rain, lots of sunlight. Coral reefs - lots of sunlight, warm temps.
