The 1970s - considered as one of the worst decades by historians. Hubert humphrey is nominated as democratic nomination. Richard nixon is nominated as republican nomination, was vp under eisenhower. Nixon had a problem: he wasn"t likable. Nixon"s america - pollution was rampant before nixon. Cleveland was prolly the worst, water supply caught fire. Under nixon, the clean air act was passed & the environment protection agency was established, first earth day in the 70s. Nixon justice department forced desegregation of schools. Triangulation - nixon had a reputation for being anti-communist china. Wanted to have peaceful coexistence, don"t want to blow anyone up. Used friendly relation w/ soviets to pressure chinese, used friendly relations w/ chinese to pressure soviets (the two hate one another) 1st american president to visit china during communism. Vietnamization - go back to where you were in 1963, turn the war back over to the vietnamese. Let"s go back to advising, no more troops.
