Tends to have a minimal impact on how americans think about their govt. Determines america"s relationships w/ other nations + foreign entities. Evolved into one of deterrence, build up military strength. Sometimes is the quintessential public good, as everyone benefits. Goals - to provide security, create prosperity, and make the world a better place. Security used to mean being able to repel invaders. Now encompasses transportation, energy, cyber-security, and food security. In terms of prosperity, there are multiple sub-goals. Promote trade policies that will keep prices low at american big box stores. The u. s. maintains an active role in international organizations (connects w/ prosperity) Includes the world trade organization, which makes & upholds free trade rules. Grant most favorable nation status to trading partners that agree to low tariffs.
