Mastaba - flat-topped, one-story building with slanted walls built on top of where people would be buried. This stepped pyramid is mastaba on mastaba on mastaba. No temples on this pyramid, like the mesopotamian ziggurats, but it"s the same concept that the stepped pyramids would be like stairways to the heavens and the gods. Imhotep - the architect of this funerary complex. He also ran the city for the king. Engaged columns - columns that look like they"re coming out of the wall; usually don"t hold anything; resemble trees/plants with strong stems (perhaps papyrus)
