Document Summary
Star topology network of computers with large central computer (the host) at the hub with direct connections to a periphery of smaller computers. Often used for a wan, where central computer is a mainframe. Mainframe computer generally known for its large size, amount of storage, processing power, and ability to host multiple operating systems. Primary communication will be between central site and the nodes, but limited communication between nodes is possible. Hierarchical topology host computer is connected to several levels of subordinate, smaller computers in a master-slave relationship. Ring topology peer-to-peer arrangement in which managing communications is distributed among the nodes. Every node on ring has unique electronic address, which is attached to messages. Messages are sent through computers on ring until reaches its destination. Nodes manage private programs and databases locally, but can be centralized by a file server if included as a node on the network ring.
