Document Summary

Ids 159 - lecture 3 - the melting pot vs. Assimilation and pluralism are subjects to debate. People think assimilation is a must to keep unity, because pluralism can create tension and conflict. Others think the melting pot does not fit our society, because people want to be accepted the way they are. Proponents think pluralism is a national resource to project and preserve. Assimilation: process where people lose cultural differences and blend into wider society. Pluralism/multiculturalism: a process through which cultural differences are acknowledged and preserved. Refer to specific traits viewed as distinguishing one person or group from another. The meaning of diversity is expanding continually. Diversity is not simply defined by race or gender. Rather, it includes whatever we think distinguished us, like education, job function and position, lifestyle, sexual orientation, marital status, military background, disability, religion, social class, etc the list goes on and on. Dimensions of diversity may be hidden or visible.
