Along with increasing ethnic diversity has come increasing religious diversity. Religious diversity developed when people came to america to escape countries with religious oppression. Mix of religion and politics is now controversial given constitutional separation of church and state in us. While most americans have some kind of religious affiliation, government holds no official religious views. Variety of religious beliefs in united states surpasses the nation"s multitude of ethnicities, nationalities and races, and making religion a source of diversity. Most christians in america are protestant, but many protestant denominations and independent congregations exist. Many major denomination, such as baptist, lutheran, and methodists are splintered into separate groups that have different ideas about church organizations. Some protestant religious movements, including fundamentalism, evangelicalism cut across different protestant organizations.
