Document Summary

Ids 159 - lecture 15 - religious diversity 2. Remain distinctive, religious minority whose social standing and influence are disproportionate to their number. Synagogue services as a place of religious worship and as a primary base for jewish identity/survival. Education played important role in advancing young jews from working class into white collars and professionals. Comparing to other minorities, jewish americans have declined, due to intermarriage, birth rate, and the establishment of the state of israel. Jews in the us and the world have been target of prejudice and discrimination, sometime leading to attempted annihilation of the entire population. Some of religious/political leaders have resisted the western influences on their countries. This has often led to fierce political battles between the two groups and has occasionally resulted in acts of terrorism. This terrorism has sometimes led to unfortunate negative reaction/inaccurate judgement against broad groups with arab/muslim backgrounds, when the extreme behaviors are that of a very small group of individuals.
