stomatitis
inflammation and ulceration of mouth. generalized inflammation of mucous
membranes of mouth
s/s - red & swollen oral mucosa, pain, ulceration, increased salivation, excessive
dryness, severe halitosis, occasional fever, loss of appetite, weight loss
TX: Antifungals - Nystatin, Clotrimazole
Antivirals - Acyclovir,
Topical analgesics - oragel, viscious lidocaine, ambesol
Rinse with 1/2 saline solution
gastritis
inflammation of mucous membranes of the stomach - acute or chronic
Tx: antispasmodic medications, coating agents (carafate), antacides before meals
(pepto, bismuth compounds, simethicone, alginic acid
*DO NOT CRUSH CARAFATE*
acute gastritis
short duration - NPO until nausea subsides, Rx to slow down peristaltic action,
IV if dehydrated
assess fluid and electrolyte imbalance
monitor vital signs, I&O and lab values
**vomiting = decreased acid
**diarrhea = decreased base
chronic gastritis
over a period of time - bland food diet, small frequent meals x 6/day
omit food that cause symptoms
medications: antacids, bismuth compounds, simethicone, alginic acid,
Histamine (H2) receptor antagonists (reduce amt of acid produced)
Protein Pump Inhibitors - (nexium, prilosec - prevent more acid being produced)
