The mood of a worm: nervous system = emergent collective property of a network rather than the sum of individual circuits, must identify all the interactions between elements, for humans, the nervous system is very complex, so, we have to study animals with more simple nervous systems to gain a greater understanding of how the system works. Neurons: sensory neurons, interneurons (not myelinated), and motor neurons, myelinated cns = white matter; long and like cables, unmyelinated cns = gray matter, short; for information processing, peripheral nerves = cable like collections of axons, ulnar nerve, called crazy bone"; depolarizes all axons if elbow pinched, afferent = relays sensation from the fourth and fifth fingers, efferent = motor to small muscles in the hand, multiple sclerosis = autoimmune destruction of myelin, loses precision of motor control because axons are open and signals skip between them.
