Document Summary
I have kept the entire long version of the michigan earthquake lecture that i only presented in abbreviated form on april 25. Parts shaded in grey were not really covered. I moved some material around so this is not exacly in the order presented. One of the major tasks is separating anthropogenic and natural near surface events from natural tectonic events. Earthquakes in the us: plate boundary events california and pacific northwest (cascadia) California: 2 3 m 8 earthquakes per century. Intraplate earthquakes more infrequent, less well studies. Michigan: about 3 m 4 5 earthquakes per century. Energy travels farther in cold rigid unbroken crust: felt area of 1895 charleston, missouri, earthquake much, much larger than the northridge earthquake of 1994 which had a comparable magnitude. Earthquakes are often used by opponents of many projects as indicating a hazard. Michigan earthquakes: michigan earthquakes have been in the news this past year with two m 3-
